Spinal Rehabilitation Unit

Newton Abbot Chiropractic Centre has opened one of Devon's first rehabilitation units specifically for chronic and recurrent injuries of the back and neck. The unit has been built as a result of recent research that found that home-based or unsupervised exercise is 60% less effective than programmes undertaken in specially designed facilities staffed by qualified trainers.

Tom Sharples (55) is a patient at the centre, and has been on a rehabilitation course there. He has had very positive results:
"I had a long-term back problem and am very pleased with the difference this course is making. Before, an attack of pain could take two or three weeks to resolve, but now it just takes two or three days. I have also noticed an improvement in general fitness, which again must help with any back complaints."

A course of spinal rehabilitation can be highly effective in strengthening and restoring the normal function of muscles, improving stamina, increasing flexibility, and reducing chronic or recurrent pain. The unit offers personalised programmes for patients who need additional help in overcoming chronic or long-term pain, using exercise equipment specifically designed for the rehabilitation of the back and neck muscles.

Each rehabilitation programme is fully supervised by a qualified trainer who works closely with the patient's chiropractor to monitor progress. A programme normally consists of two one-hour sessions per week for 13 weeks, after which patients are shown how to do exercises safely at home using very simple equipment.

The new unit includes luxury changing rooms, showers and lockers as well as a relaxation area.
